Job Title: Part-Time Street Cleaner
Department: Special Improvement District / Business Improvement District (SID/BID)

JOB SUMMARY
South Orange Downtown (SODT) is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Part-Time Street Cleaner to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and appeal of South Orange’s downtown district. Responsibilities include sweeping sidewalks, streets, and public areas; removing graffiti, stickers, and illegal advertisements; cleaning public street furniture; and clearing litter and debris from landscaped areas.
As a representative of SODT, you will assist the public by providing directions or information when requested. A branded uniform provided by SODT is required for a professional and identifiable appearance.
This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions and involves physical tasks such as walking, bending, lifting, and kneeling. The role is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work and is committed to maintaining high standards of public cleanliness. Your efforts will directly contribute to a welcoming and vibrant downtown community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleaning and Maintenance:
Sweep sidewalks, curbs, alleyways, and public spaces using brooms and cleaning tools.
Press down trash in receptacles to prevent overflow and maintain cleanliness.
Wipe down trash cans, benches, and other public furniture to keep them clean and free of grime.
Remove graffiti, bills, stickers, and illegal advertisements from street furniture and public surfaces.
Remove trash, litter, and debris from bushes, tree beds, and landscaped areas.
Light landscaping like watering and weed removal
Utilize tools like leaf blowers, litter grabbers, trash compactors, and other related equipment to support cleaning tasks.
Task Tracking and Condition Monitoring and Reporting:
Report street conditions or safety concerns requiring municipal attention.
Use GPS tracking software to record work hours, track completed tasks, and ensure transparency.
Ambassador Responsibilities:
Act as a friendly and professional representative of South Orange Downtown by assisting residents, visitors, and businesses when approached.
Provide helpful information about the district, such as event details, directions, and nearby amenities.
Ensure your appearance and demeanor reflect the professionalism of SODT by wearing the provided branded uniform and maintaining a courteous attitude at all times.
Serve as an extra set of eyes and ears for the district by observing and reporting any unusual activity or concerns to the appropriate personnel.
Event Support:
Assist with the preparation, setup, and breakdown of SODT events.
Provide on-site support during events, such as monitoring public areas for cleanliness, replenishing supplies, or addressing minor maintenance issues.
Other Duties:
Perform special maintenance tasks and activities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform routine manual labor activities.
Physical capability to engage in prolonged walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting (up to 50 pounds).
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Strong communication skills for working effectively with team members and interacting courteously with the public.
Licensing and Education:
A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
Prior experience in street sweeping, general labor, or custodial roles is a plus; on-the-job training will be provided.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.

WORK CONDITIONS
Schedule: Flexible part-time shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed. The position requires approximately 20 hours per week.
Environment: Work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Uniform: Must wear a branded uniform, which SODT will provide.
COMPENSATION:
Hourly wage based on experience.
